Do you lead a hectic lifestyle? Do you ever take time out to just stop and smell the roses? Do you feel like your body is starting to slow down, become sluggish and lash out at you with pains, illness and breakouts? It might be time to address the stress in your life, and add some ‘me time’ to your daily routine.

Stress is and forever will be a part of our lives. Sometimes a small amount of stress can be good for us! We might need it to give us a kick in the bum to make that deadline. But prolonged stress can be bad for our bodies. We need to learn how to control it, manage it and eliminate it.

When we are stressed, our body goes to ‘fight or flight‘ mode. The brain tells our adrenal glands to produce more adrenaline to help us get through the situation. Once the ‘fear’ is gone, our bodies should go back to normal. When the ‘fear’ lingers, or does not go away for extended periods of time, or at all, then this take a toll on our body. It cant keep up with the constant demand for Adrenalin and our bodies organs and bodily functions work overtime. This can cause an imbalance of hormones, which can sometimes cause havoc on your skin. Your heart also works overtime during periods of stress, trying to get enough oxygen throughout the body. If this goes on for too long it can increase your risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.

When your body is stressed, all of your brains attention is being focused on getting you through the stressful situation, focusing on the Adrenalin and oxygen levels within your blood and enabling you to either ‘fight or flight’. This means that the skin (the body’s largest organ, but also the most ignored!) gets hardly any attention at all! This can result in skin issues and disorders, including breakouts and dehydration.

We need to look after our bodies and recognise those stressors in order to prevent any future health issues. A great way to do this is to allocate a certain amount of ‘me time’ per week. This can include reading a book, going for a walk, getting a massage, retail therapy… anything that will take your mind of things for a while and allow your body to re-boot.

Some of you may be thinking “But I don’t have time for any of those things…” well make time! It doesn’t have to take 3 hours out of your day, but just enough to make you feel relaxed. It will be worth it, trust me! I’m sure you’d rather take 30 minutes every second day to do something just for you, than to discover you have high blood pressure, or that you’re skin has broken out right before an important meeting or interview!

I encourage all of you to roster in some ‘me time’. Why not make it your July Challenge!? Block out 30 minutes each day (it can be before you go to bed, or when you first get up in the morning if that’s easier) and at the end of the month reward yourself with something even better! Or book yourself a weekly massage (hot stone is perfect for this time of year!) and make sure that you DONT CANCEL. Once they’re all booked in for the month, you’re more inclined to actually attend them. So book in advance and make sure you get your ‘me time’! Luminescence Beauty Therapies offer Packages for Facials and Massages, offering you a FREE treatment if you purchase 5 treatments in one go.

Looking forward to seeing you for some ‘me time’ at our Balwyn Beauty Salon soon! To book an appointment, contact our Balwyn Beauty Salon.
