Vitamin C is an essential and very common ingredient in the majority of skincare brands today.
Vitamin C is known to be an anti-ageing superstar! It is used to give a flawless, smooth textured and plumper skin. It is one of the most popular and most effective antioxidants in skin care. It can be ingested orally through foods and vitamin tablets, however most of this does not even touch the skin! Vitamin C needs to applied topically in order to be effective in improving the quality of the skin.
There are many different forms of Vitamin C. The most popular is L-Ascorbic Acid. This is the left side of the molecule, which is the most stable when applied to the skin. Ascorbic Acid is know to be very unstable. It is difficult to create a form that is long lasting without oxidising. When it is exposed to regular air and light, oxidization occurs, turning the formula from a lightish yellow colour to a deep yellow/brown. If this occurs to any of your products containing Vitamin C, they are no longer effective and need to be disposed of. They will often have a fairly strong smell to them when oxidised too.
As an antioxidant, Vitamin C fights against free-radical damage within the skin. It assists in reversing the effects of oxidization and regenerating and renewing the cells. As Ascorbic Acid is water soluble, it is only effective in fighting against certain free radicals. Other antioxidant are also needed to help out. For this reason, Vitamin E works very well in conjunction with Vitamin C.
Vitamin C also helps produce collagen within the skin. Collagen is a major skin protein that strengthens and thickens the skin to prevent wrinkles and poor elasticity. It also thickens the dermis to fight against UV damage causing pigmentation. It has been proven to protect against future UV damage (do not think that it replaces SPF, this is still needed) as well as help rid of existing pigmentation within the skin.
Due to its potency, it is recommended that Vitamin C levels are slowly built up within the skin to avoid any adverse reactions. Pelactiv’s Vita C+ Range is excellent. The range contains a Cleanser, Toner, 2 serums, eye cream, day cream and night cream. We recommend starting off with a cleanser, toner and moisturiser until the skin becomes accustomed to the Vitamin C levels within these products. The serum and eye creams can then be added every second night and gradually built up to once per day if necessary.
