Now that Melbourne is finally turning it on for Summer, it’s time to re-evaluate your skin care routine.
You will often find your skin can change significantly with the change of seasons. A lot of the time, people will opt for thicker and heavier humectants and oils during winter when their skin needs more protection from dehydration and lipid loss, and will swap over to lighter serums and lotions during the summer months when they don’t feel like anything too heavy on their skin. It is however important to always keep up a routine! Don’t just stop putting moisturiser on during the summer months!
Depending on your skin type, you may find that a gel or foaming cleanser will work better on your skin during the warmer months. Often people will find that the mixture of sweat, SPF and Makeup, as well as pollutants in the air etc will cause their skin to feel a lot more ‘grimy’ and will need a bit more of a thorough clean each night. If you’re sticking with a creamy cleanser or lotion, you may find it beneficial to add in a swipe of toner after you cleanse to remove any excess cream or oil, and balance the ph of the skin out for better product penetration. Just be sure to use a Toner or tonic that contains NO alcohol.
SERUMS AND OILS
As many of you know, I am OBSESSED with Pelactiv’s ‘Precious Oils’, and I do still continue to use it in summer, however I tend to only apply in the evenings, and I mix it with my other serums or moisturiser to ensure I’m using a little less. During the morning I’ll opt for a super light serum or ‘water-like’ consistency product like bt-ceuticals Platinum Peptide Serum, or Restyfluid, which still contain high amounts of peptides and hyaluronic acid to hydrate and nourish the skin, without the heavy feeling.
I still recommend that clients use a thicker night cream in the evening, as your skin gets the most attention from your body during times of rest, so the more active products you can get working on your skin while you sleep, the better! However, during the day I recommend using a lighter moisturizer. One with more of a gel like consistency or thinner texture. Of course you should ALWAYS finish your skincare routine with an SPF, and depending on which brand and type you use, sometimes these can be quite thick so it’s nice to not have a double layer of thicker creams sitting on the skin during the heat.
Don’t forget the rest of your body! Your face isn’t the only part of your skin that needs looking after. Make sure that during summer you are regularly exfoliating and moisturising your body (especially arms and legs) regularly! Pelactiv’s Body Scrub is a lovely Gel formula that works well with a loofah or exfoliating mitt in the shower. Finish off with Pelactiv’s Body lotion which is super light and smells divine!
