During winter we often complain that our skin feels tighter, dryer and overall a lot duller than it does in summer.  In this article we discover WHY does our skin change during the cooler months and how we can FIX it to make sure we achieve glowing skin all year round!

In order to understand WHY our skin changes, we first need to understand how the skin retains and loses moisture.

Dry Skin infographic showing difference between dry and hydrated skins.

Think of your skin like a sponge, with lots of tiny holes that air and moisture can move in and out of.  By moving in and out of dry heat (e.g. a heated house, office or car) to the wild windy Melbourne weather, we lose moisture from our skin as the air around contains less moisture than what our skin does.  Water likes to move from a low concentration to a higher concentration, so as a result we lose moisture from our skin.  This process is called Trans epidermal water loss (TEWL).  If we have no barrier on the surface of our skin, then the atmosphere around us will draw the moisture out of it.  In order to keep our skin hydrated, we need to ensure there is always a good barrier protecting it, as well as other hydrating and nourishing ingredients to keep the lower layers of the skin plump and full of moisture.

Certain serums, moisturisers and creams, as well as SPF’s can do this for us. We may find in winter we need to move to a slightly heavier product than what we use in summer.  For day protection I recommend IMAGE Skincare’s Ultimate Protection Hydrating SPF.  Not only does this protect our skin from UVA and UVB rays, it also creates a nice nourishing barrier on the skin while also protecting our cells’ DNA.

To lock in moisture in the evenings, I recommend IMAGE Skincare’s night repair cremes.  The MAX Stem Cell Crème is a powerhouse repair crème, containing a whole heap of plant derived stem cells as well as antioxidants and peptides to help protect, nourish and hydrate your skin cells.  It also uses Vectorize Technology, which is an encapsulation method containing key ingredients that are slowly released into the skin over 48 hours.  The Vital C Repair crème is great for those needing extra hydration who have sensitive skin (think rosacea, eczema, super dry etc).   Adding in a Hyaluronic based serum or treatment product is also a must!  Hyaluronic acid holds up to 1000 times its own weight in water, so it will really give you an extra boost of much needed hydration.  The NEW IMAGE Skincare product ‘Hydrating Water Burst” from the Vital C Range is one of my go-to’s during winter for this reason!  The Ageless Pure Hyaluronic Filler, which contains 6 different forms of low and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, helps to smooth away fine lines, plump the skin and add a huge moisture boost.

It is also a GREAT idea to change your cleanser over to a cream based cleanser. These will help your skin to feel a lot softer and won’t strip the skin too much, giving you that tight uncomfortable feeling.

Skincare professionals LOVE winter, as this is the perfect time to undergo a course of intensive facials or skin peels, as we tend to not spend as much time in the sun during winter, so we have less risk of sun damage and post treatment pigmentation occurring.
